Angel of the Amazon

We invite you to attend a private gathering honoring the life and work of Sister Dorothy Stang, an American nun martyred at the hands of the destroyers of the Brazilian rainforest. Memorialized by an HBO documentary, Sister Dorothy is the subject of this new opera by contemporary American composer Evan Mack.

For almost 40 years, Dorothy, a Sister of Notre Dame, devoted her life to the people and land of Brazil. Her passionate support of poor farmers’ rights and her protectiveness of the rainforest, caused her to challenge the land-greedy ranchers and logging industry in the Amazon.

On February 12, 2005, two hired gunmen shot her six times, thinking they had finally silenced this gentle crusader for the poor.

Mezzo-Soprano Erin Greene sings selections from the role of Dorothy Stang, accompanied by the composer, Evan Mack. Michele Murdock, author of A Journey of Courage, The Amazing Story of Sister Dorothy Stang, will share some thoughts about the writing of her book. And enjoy Samuel Barber’s Ballade and John Adams’ American Berserk, both for solo piano, performed by Dr. Mack; and a selection from Carlisle Floyd’s opera, Susannah, sung by David Salsbery Fry.

Please join us for an inspiring afternoon of new music drama. We hope you will take this opportunity to renew your commitment to the timeless mission of creativity in support of our common humanity.
